Rogers’ iPhone 3G Plans Drive Canadians Crazy

Why, I say they are acting very calmly. Had it been AT&T, you would have found me outside their HO with a board in my hand. The rates are completely unjustifiable. Its as if Rogers Communication ,Inc. is holding the nation by its neck and seemingly they don’t have a choice!

And with Apple’s new ‘unlock’ prevention techniques, it seems that the helpless canadians will also be unable to look to something ‘other than legal’. (Not to mention, even if they manage to get something like that Rogers is the sole EDGE/HSDPA carrier in the country)

If you think that, “Ok well, what could be so bad?”, below is a table (courtesy: Andy Peatling) comparing the rate plans for the iPhone 3G from 3 different carriers in 3 different countries (Rogers and Canada being one of them, respectively):

iPhone 3G Plans

From the above table, we can watch how the carrier, well known for its sky high rate plans, extorts and threats the nationals. A 3 year long contract, 400MB data plan, 75 SMS and just 150 voice minutes sum up to a $3,225 iPhone 3G. What’s more is that you have to pay $15 for caller display! And no, Im not joking.

  1. This is ridiculous!

What is with the rage with iPhone Plans in Canada? sure, by comparisons it’s such a rip-off compared to other countries such as The United States and The UK.

Where’s the rage and protest against such ridiculous data plan with the Blackberries in Canada?

Canadian Tel-Co has been charging their customers to the mitochondria well before the iPhone 3G announcement.

ruinediphone.com is so disingenuous. If the Canadian wants to protest, then protest the source that is the ridiculously expensive wireless data plan.

It seems that the whole ruinediphone.com and others alike are great PR move for other handset manufacturers.

If you don’t like the iPhone 3G plan in Canada, then get the Canada’s own Blackberry Plan. Wait a minute, it’s not any better. It is worse!

All in all, it is Rogers and other Canadian Tel-Co that need to be protested.

You can make a difference by protesting the Tel-Co. It has nothing to do with the iPhone at all.

  2. Yup and I cant agree any more! But all about Steve Jobs stating the term “affordable” in his keynote at this wwdc. if Apple has such command and bonds with its carriers, then we should expect both Apple and Rogers to so something about it.

Also, you yourself are saying that all the carriers are the same in Canada, thats the difference Im taking about! The iPhone is just an oppurtunity for all of us to make a point and set such an example for all the phones around, iphone and non iphones as equal!

NOW, its not just about iPhone, its for an overall cause to see the rates slashed for all phones!

iPhone is just the beginning. And a good one to because its a device which all, corporate, enterprise, home, small office, traveller, etc all love. So the Canadians have a much wider scope to fight Rogers. And if Rogers gets defeated in this one, it’ll be the beginning of an avalanche!

  3. Rogers has done it again! No UNLIMITED Data plan for iPhone

Well Rogers has done it again, showing it’s yellow monopolistic teeth! 2GB of Data per month with the $115 Package? This is highway robbery! Are these corporate bloodsuckers for real?

All this is stemming from he fact that there are no competition for Rogers in Canada! No other GSM Service Provider! I was planning to at least buy 3 iPhone 3Gs, but I changed my mind! No iPhone till Rogers stops this draconian pricing for their data plan! What is hard to understand is this: Why Rogers has such a problem with DATA? Why? At least can they stop issuing decrees and actually explain to their clients why they are so stingy with their data bandwidth? May be also explain to us why the majority of Service Providers selling iPhone can sell their phones with an unlimited data plan?

Only 2GB a Month? This is a disgrace and it shows what Rogers really thinks about their Canadian Customers! They truly think that we are stupid & ignorant and that we neither know – nor are we capable of learning anything! Well I have news for you, Rogers: WE ARE NOT! I am canceling my plans for purchasing 3 iPhone 3G, until they offer UNLIMITED Data Plan! I am sure that most people, after finding out what Rogers is really doing, will cancel their plans as well. So I guess it was all for nothing to wait a full year for the arrival of iPhone to Canada! 😦

Knowing about Rogers underhanded decision not to offer UNLIMITED data plan, Apple should have NEVER given iPhone sells rights to Rogers in the first place! Unlimited Data has been the cornerstone of Apple’s agreement for allowing a Service Provider to sell iPhone. Rogers held out for a full year, knowing that they have the monopoly on GSM market, and Apple gave up, which is very uncharacteristic of Apple. I guess Apple doesn’t care about their it’s Canadian Clients either!

  4. thats crazy!

  5. I can no longer access http://www.ruinediphone.com/ from my Rogers account. Is it possible that Rogers is actually blocking access to it because they don’t like what it says?

  6. Try this:

    http://www.ruinediphone.com/index.php

They are having some DNS propagation problems so you ‘might’ have some difficulties accessing the site!

And as far as Rogers blocking the site is concerned, completely possible (yes, illegal as well) but didn’t hear something like that!

  7. yes i too seem to not be able to get on the site from rogers account

  8. I cannot get it at home (rogers account). I can get to the website from work.

  9. LOOKS LIKE ROGERS HAS BLOCKED THE SITE. . . I accessed it through an anonymous proxy server. . . and while that window was opened I simultaneously tried accessing the site in another window by typing the site name directly into the address bar – and was denied!!!!!!!

  10. Would it be smart to minor in creative writing and major in biochemistry?
